John Blake
Senior Supervising Attorney

John is a Senior Supervising Attorney at Tzedek DC, where he advocates for the rights of District consumers with low incomes through representation, litigation, and policy work, while supervising staff attorneys. John is passionate about using consumer law to empower his clients to create lasting economic uplift. John has represented clients and supervised attorneys in representations before the DC Court of Appeals, the DC Superior Court, the DC Office of Human Rights, the DC Office of Administrative Hearings, and the Social Security Administration.

John started his career in civil legal aid as a Howard C. Westwood Fellow at the Neighborhood Legal Services Program in 2018. After serving as the Managing Attorney of NLSP’s Economic Security Unit, John rejoined Tzedek DC in March of 2025 as a Senior Supervising Attorney.

John earned his J.D. from The University of The District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude. During his time there, he was selected as a Dean’s Fellow, received the Earl H. Davis Award as an Olender Scholar, was selected as a Joseph L. Rauh Summer Fellow and as a Freddie Mac Fellow, served as Notes Editor of the U.D.C. Law Review, and was a recipient of the Dean’s Cup for his commitment to service and scholarship. John is an alum of the UDC-DACSL Housing and Consumer Law Clinic and served as a teaching assistant after his clinical rotation. John also served as a research assistant to former Dean of Academics LaShanda T. Adams. John received his B.A. in Public Administration and American Government from the University of Montana.

John has been advocating for and serving people living in poverty for decades. Before law school, John worked as a long-time organizer, activist, and nonprofit administrator, advocating for the rights of racial minorities, LGBTQIA people, and women. He is an alum of the AmeriCorps State and National Justice For Montanans Program, where he worked with the Montana Legal Services Association to increase access to civil legal services.

John is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia.
